Kfc Comes to Hanoi

September 17, 2006 / by Catidogi

Before I turn this over to the Vietnamese reviewer, you should know the price of the standard KFC meal in Hanoi is $2.50, which is only 50 cents above the Vietnamese meal.

Reviewer: I can't believe the government has accepted KFC in Viet Nam, first in Ho Chi Minh city a few years ago and now in Ha Noi.

It seems that Vietnamese people love this kind of fast food. However, lots of my friends have told me that this is not special at all and quite expensive but kids are loving it. I don’t understand why adult people also eat it a lot. I tried it once in Saigon in the last few years, another time on the way to Anglesea in Australia and I hated it.

To compare the income of the average Vietnamese and the price of KFC in Viet Nam, you can see that not many people can afford this kind of fast food. There are a few Vietnamese fast food restaurants in Hanoi such as 123 or ABC and so many small fast food restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City which are quite successful with some dishes similar to those at KFC. I wonder why people like to eat fast food when they have so many options to choose from on the street in Vietnam, as well as some good Thai food, Indian food, for a more reasonable price. We can easily understand why kids love to try these foods but parents should say something to them and they don't. In the evening most days, especially on the weekend, these places are packed and hard to get a seat. Why is that?

One of my best friends is a Vietnamese lady. She eats American food of all stripes but prefers "her own." A study just out said that in the USA, the longest living ethnic group is Vietnamese women, averaging 91-years in age.
You can bet your bippy they aren't eating finger licking good fried chicken.
By the way, Vietnamese coffee beans are the most wonderful I've ever tasted !

My American friends said our KFC was similar to the US version, but the $9.00 price was too dear. For that money you can buy two roasted chickens. We have a few Vietnamese families here and for a while they supported an ethnic grocery. The food was tasty no fat a strong bias for fish. I can understand why they live so long.

Around here most of the Jewish families came from North Africa. We put hot spices into everything except milk. When my British hubby ate at my mom's place, his mouth and throat were in flames. In the restaurants I would order unspiced food for hubby. The waiter would come back. "How can he taste it?"

Very funny. It sounds like Manchester United handled the chickens for KFC. [My late husband was from London.] When KFC first came here, they gave free Chicken McNuggets, which were superb. After they put such high prices [for Israel], they closed quickly.

My friends who tour the UK remark over the wonderful restaurants in London. Veterans say that thirty years ago the Cheshire Cheese on the Strand, the fish and chips served in newspapers and the Indian eateries were the only good places. Now, they have Scottish beef and lamb and a full range of oriental.
My American friends claim Aunt Hattie’s Chicken Shack in Saratoga Springs NY is the premier fried chicken place. It’s a shame the Saratoga flat track season ended in August.
