Did JFK Call Himself a Jelly Doughnut?

January 25, 2008 / by Catidogi

"Ich bin ein Berliner." Was JFK claiming to be a jelly doughnut? We Israelis call them sufganiyyot, which are favorites around Chanukah. Our better shops use cake flour instead of the subsidized bread variety.

We always called them Berliners, but they are actually Fast Night Cakes which are traditionally eaten the night prior to Lent.  I use to know how to spell that in German, but I have very little German language left.  If ya don't use it... you loose it.  All I know is that I love those donuts.  We made them out of a yeast bread which was then deep fat fried and rolled in sugar.  We never put jelly in them, but some people did.

    Annie :o)
